Some of us who have chosen to follow Jesus can draw upon wonderful examples from "the great cloud of witnesses" who demonstrate how to live lives as his witnesses. The supreme example is, of course, "Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith." For some, however, it is convincing to see the human example which is presently demonstrating the powerful reality of Christ.
A class of young people was once asked if they knew anyone who really was living the Christian life. Whom did they know who lived in such a way that indicated they were guided by the life and teaching of Jesus? Several persons were mentioned like mother, father, pastor, Sunday school teacher. The one who clearly got the most mention came as quite a surprise. It was the custodian of the church. When pressed for their reasons, answers like this quickly came. He is kind, always prompt to do his work; he does his work well. He is faithful to his church; he never loses his temper; he doesn't get out of patience with the youth; and he does extra work without grumbling. As the pastor involved, I could add that he was all of this without calling attention to himself.
Some Christians are fortunate to get a lot of help from the models they see around them.
