To punish myself I just turned around and counted the number of books on weight control that I have in my personal library. Twenty-one books that tell me how to control my weight. For my own health's sake and my own peace of mind, I have read them all cover to cover. Yet I battle the problem year in and year out. This has been a good year. I have lost thirty pounds I never needed to put on in the first place. I love a good steak. But I also love good desserts and lots of vegetables. And a salad and lots of coffee and tea. And an occasional candy bar and pretzels. Would you say that I have a problem with gluttony? As a pastor I have counseled with those who know this game. Jim tells me that the very sign that says Speed Limit 70 challenges him to drive faster. Alice says a sales brochure saying "One-Half Off" tempts her to buy twice as much as she needs. We have a brother who was a missionary. He made three missionary journeys that were so famous we read about them in the Bible. Paul knows all about my weight problem. For he too has a problem he never got victory over. He struggled with it all his life. Paul was confused by what he wanted to do and what he actually did. Does this confuse us, too? Is there any help for us? Paul suggests that "servants of sin" become the "servants of righteousness." Through the grace of God we can become united with Christ.
