In recent years there has been more and more anger directed against immigrants to the United States. People resent those who come here legally. And they feel outrage toward those who enter this country without the proper documents, like the boat people who try to flee from places like Haiti and Cuba. People say: "We can't have boat people pouring into our country. What if some of those people are undesirable?" But consider this. Despite how much press it is getting nowadays, the boat people phenomenon is nothing new for this nation. It has been going on ever since the boat people that Columbus brought here in 1492. And boat people have continued to flock to these shores for more than five centuries, arriving in places like Plymouth Rock and Ellis Island. We must remember that Abraham, our ancestor in the faith, was once a man without a country to call home. -- Bowen
