Recently Anne, Mary and Nancy attended a Leadership Development Seminar. For five days they dealt with issues like communication, goal setting and conflict resolution. On their flight home they were seated directly across from a young couple and their 7-month-old daughter. Anne, Mary and Nancy enjoyed entertaining her with smiles and funny faces. Although not yet speaking, this child could communicate clearly through her gurgles of delight, tears of pain and stares of shyness. Toward the end of their flight Anne said, "Isn't it neat that you can talk to a baby without using any particular language? Baby talk has to be a universal language." "It could be," replied Mary, "but I wonder how long it will take for that baby to learn to distrust others. Once that happens, she'll be lucky if knowing how to speak gets her message across." "If only," mused Nancy, "there was some way that we could all learn to trust and to love each other." -- Conroy
