Recently I attended a conference that concluded with a communion service. As we prepared for communion we observed that numerous symbols had been placed upon the table. Each individual present was given a particular figure and asked to meditate upon it for a few moments. Following our personal meditation, we shared with one another our feelings about our own symbol.
I had been given a bread plate. What was I going to say about a bread plate? As I recall, I said something like this: "I am only a plate. I am not as important as the bread on the wine. But, I do perform a function. I am the instrument used to bring the bread to others. I play a subordinate role, but nonetheless an essential one. I am basically a servant."
I wonder if the man from Baalshalishah after his episode with Elisha had a similar feeling? To be employed by God in some simple act of service is not only humbling but also exhilarating.
