Research is being conducted in many places (Emory University in Atlanta, the Wadsworth Center of the New York State Department of Health in Albany, Duke University, Brown University, Penn State University, and elsewhere) to determine the extent of communication people who have lost all motor reflexes, who are entirely paralyzed, can exert with just mental activity. Such people show absolutely no sign of recognition or response to speech or other stimuli.
Niels Birbaumer, a German neuroscientist from the University of Tübingen, is a noted leader in efforts that would enable these people who are "locked in," unable to communicate with the world, to do so. Brain-Computer Interface systems, as his discovery is known, separate human communication from human muscle and give thought alone the power of action. Birbaumer has seemingly succeeded! Almost miraculously, he has enabled a patient, Elias Musiris Chahlin of Lima, Peru, who is completely unable to move one muscle in his face or body, to communicate using a Thought Translation Device. With thought alone, Musiris has been able to move a white ball up and down a computer screen, answering yes and no questions, indicating what business decisions he wishes to be made and where he wants to be taken.
The sheer power of human thought is amazing. Consider the power it has to control objects on a computer screen. But the Word of God is much more amazing. It has the power to convict sinners and to generate eternal life in those who believe its message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
