Richard's drinking problem was extending into its second decade. With each passing year, the problem became worse. This was the fifth trip he had made to a substance abuse in-patient clinic and each sojourn was getting closer to the last. He had been in "detox" only six months ago. The time before that he had made it nearly a year.
It was obvious to everyone except him that he was losing more and more control over his life. He still liked to think that his problem and his life were still manageable.
In a private session with the counselor, Richard finally revealed the reason why the Twelve Steps don't work for him. "To be perfectly honest," he admitted. "I've never really been able to believe in a Higher Power. I have always believed that I am the highest authority in my life."
The Book of Revelation brings a word of hope and encouragement in a time of trouble and persecution. There is power in knowing that God is the Alpha and Omega and that we, as mere
mortals, do not have the last word and that all hope does not end with us. Unfortunately, anyone who believes himself or herself the Alpha and Omega is destined to despair.
