Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, has had a powerful effect upon the people of his country. His statue at Bannockburn has him seated majestically upon his war horse. To look at him is to see a man of strength, determination and honor. It is almost as if he is alive and still with the Scottish people as their leader, and not a distant relic of the 14th century. No Scot can gaze upon his likeness and not be moved. This king is an ever-present reality.
John has painted for us an unforgettable picture of an even greater king in his portrayal of Jesus before Governor Pilate. On Christ the King Sunday we need to be reminded always that this "kingship is not of this world" but is an eternal kingdom.
