This Roman Lectionary Gospel is so rich I wish it was an alternate lesson for some of the rest of us other than on Trinity Sunday in Cycle C.
Jesus accepts separation from his friends and loneliness, so God can send another Helper, that the Apostles may not fail in their witness to him. Our personal pilgrimage with Jesus is made possible by those who have gone before us, and the power of God the Holy Spirit living in us.
Christians are to be different, but not odd. Christians need support to live their life. That's why movements like A.A. and Cursillo emphasize small group meetings to share and support the work. The Spirit is at work in the individual believer and in the church.
What a lovely thought in the closing verses: the words of the Spirit are the words Jesus has given him to speak. We are not confused by receiving instructions from a committee of three, as Jesus and the Spirit speak what they hear from the Creator God. This is a thought often forgotten, and very Trinitarian.
