"The Rubaiyat" of Omar Khayyam states,
The Moving Finger writes; and having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.
So it goes for our writing, speaking, and acting. We can't push the clock's hand counterclockwise and undo what we did yesterday. On earth, we drag the ball and chain of our past deeds' consequences; but, when God reconciles and forgives us, we start again. This is the center of the New Testament message and the experience of forgiveness.
Dag Hammarskjold, secretary general of the United Nations (1953-1961), said, "Forgiveness is the answer to the child's dream of a miracle by which what is broken is made whole again, what is soiled is again made clean." When God forgives us and reconciles us, what we've always desired, happens. With God we start life over.
