The same message of God's...

The same message of God's deliverance, celebrated by Moses and the Hebrew people after the crossing of the Red Sea and their escape from Egypt, is appropriate for Easter Day. Easter is God's assurance to a broken world that he will ultimately deliver his people from the hands of the Evil One. The decisive battle between good and evil was fought on Calvary. Though there are still many personal conflicts to be faced, and many battles to be fought, the ultimate triumph of God's purpose of salvation is assured. Best of all, the same God who delivered his fear-ridden followers from the hands of the Egyptians can deliver his fearful followers in the twentieth century from the evil of our own time.
When my wife and I were visiting St. Paul's Cathedral in London, our guide showed us a photograph of the bombing of London in the Second World War. He told us he was a young man then, and he remembered this particular night when it seemed as if all London was aflame. His voice filled with emotion as he described how he and his family, outside the city, could only see flames and clouds of smoke. They began to weep, because they felt all England, and perhaps their very lives were being destroyed that night. Then there came a breeze, the smoke cleared for only a moment, but the guide told us, "I caught sight, in those moments, of the gold Cross of Christ still standing on St. Paul's, and in that moment, I knew there was a power greater than the Swastika that would bring us through." It was the power of God who delivered Christ from the bonds of death.
