In a sample litany included in the book Battered Women by Joy Bussert, a battered woman says: "I have nowhere to go if it happens again. No one wants to take in a woman with four children." It's not that some people don't care, or that many people don't see the sin of battering. It's just complicated when we become involved. After all who wants to be a part of a "domestic situation"?
Hebrews reminds us that Jesus has suffered the unwarranted battering of others. In reminding us that Jesus understands those who suffer or who are tempted, we are called to join him and be involved with all humanity. Perhaps the biggest temptation we face is to become so caught up in ourselves and our needs that we cannot hear the cries of the battered everywhere.
