In San Francisco, California, St. Mary's Cathedral presents an overwhelming architectural form of beauty and power to the worshiper. One unique feature of the chancel area is a magnificent art work suspended from the ceiling over the altar. It is made out of shimmering, fragile pieces of metal which seem almost alive as they arch over everything. The very presence of this art work is meant to symbolize "Shekinah" or the Presence of God, as did the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire sent to the Hebrews.
At Mercy Center in Burlingame, the chapel there has been renovated. With the placing of a simple altar more to the center of the congregation, a large, spacious area remains empty behind it. Against the wall, with the Book on one side and the Eucharist on the other, this vast space invites the worshiper's contemplation of the God who occupies all space and time. Less means more.
And so it is throughout our faith journey: we find symbols to remind us of God's presence. Each faith community has its particular beloved set of symbols. Buildings, crosses, music, books, special vestments, symbols of all kinds to tell us God is with us.
These verses remind us there is a truth we are yet unable to fully grasp. A time will come when reality is no longer mediated by symbols. All we have held dear as a link to God will be removed for the actuality. God will be God complete, present to each and all of us. "... its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb."
