The scene is a double room in a hospital. One patient was suffering post-operative pains that were becoming wholly intolerable. He felt like crying out but did not wish to disturb his fellow patient who seemed to be in a deep sleep. But he groaned under his burden. Then out of the darkness, he heard a quiet voice: "Dear Lord, help me to bear my friend's pain, as Jesus bore the pain of the cross for me."
Looking down at his bedside, he saw his fellow patient who had left his bed and was now on his knees in prayer.
We call it vicarious suffering. Isaiah speaks of one "who bore the sins of many and interceded for the transgressors."
