This section is disjointed, say some critics. Nearly every sentence deals with a different
topic. The verses left out of this reading vary even further and include some serious
warnings. Why does this closing section of the last Bible book so quickly change from
one subject to the next? This variation stands in contrast to the nearly mathematical
precision of Revelation's other chapters.
There's a perfectly logical reason for the changes. Think of two good friends who visit for what they know will be the final time. They carefully and thoughtfully discuss topics important to both. Then it's time for one of them to leave and get in the car. As they say good-bye, the one in the vehicle will hear cautions about traveling and some loving reminders about matters they discussed earlier.
The book of Revelation contains the Lord's final words to us as we venture on our pilgrim way. The closing verses are final, loving admonitions to us. Read them with care, caution, and appreciation.
