Several years ago our television screen resounded to the glorious music of the "Hallelujah Chorus" in an ice cream store's ad for their hot fudge sauce. At first one's attention was immediately caught up in the stirring music, but the setting soon made it incongruous and inappropriate.
Angry phone calls and mail forced the company to rethink its advertising message. Company officials were surprised at the intensity of the complaints. One official said he selected the music because it was "loud" and seemed to be a good way to "attract attention."
Handel's music, on behalf of ice cream, does not seem an appropriate choice. A much better setting for songs of victory and celebration is the Easter setting. "I will sing to the Lord for he has triumphed gloriously." The faithful of Jesus' day remembered the glorious deliverance from the bondage of Egypt. We today remember the majestic power of God revealed in our Lord's victory over death. It is a day to celebrate the Lord's deliverance of his people.
