Shirley and Carol were best...

Shirley and Carol were best friends. They did almost everything together. They sat beside each other in class. They belonged to the same clubs in high school. They even bought the same clothes. One of the few things that Shirley and Carol didn't do together was go to church. Shirley went to a church which talked openly about an individual's need to confess her sins and to be born again. Carol went to a church that didn't talk about being born again. In fact that kind of language made Carol really uncomfortable. It was the only topic that she and Shirley couldn't talk about. When Shirley and Carol were in Grade 13 they attended a week of Christian Services designed for teenagers. At the end of each service the worship leader invited anyone who would like to accept Jesus as his/her personal Lord and Savior to come forward. Shirley and Carol watched as hundreds of teenagers moved forward to receive Christ as their Savior. Shirley was elated. It was all she could talk about as they drove home each night. Shirley was so excited that she didn't even notice that Carol remained silent. Before Shirley and Carol knew it, the last service was over. It had been a great week for both of them. At the end of the week, Carol was still uncomfortable with the idea of needing to be born again, but for the first time she could talk about it with Shirley. "Do you know what really scares me?" Shirley asked Carol. "I'm afraid that something is going to happen to one of my friends who don't know anything about Jesus and about being born again. I'm afraid that they are going to die and I'll never see them again. Not even in heaven." For the first time Carol realized how serious Shirley was about being born again in Christ. "I'm going to ask my pastor if we've been born again," Carol replied. "It would be terrible never to see you again."
