Sixteen-year-old Lee woke up in the hospital with a broken leg, a concussion and multiple lacerations. Since the leg was broken in several places, rehabilitative therapy was going to be long and painful. What hurt even more than the physical pain was the knowledge that the accident had been totally avoidable. He had gone along with his buddies after the game and had "chugged down" three beers. Then, going against every bit of common sense in the book, he had decided to try to drive home, even though he could feel the alcohol taking effect. So, when he approached the railroad track, he was sure he had plenty of time to beat the train.
Fortunately, his parents were forgiving folks --grateful that their son was still alive in spite of his poor judgment. After reviewing the accident and his resulting injuries, Lee made this observation and pledge to his parents:
"I made some really dumb mistakes to get here. I can't change that. I am paying for those mistakes with pain. But, I will be stronger for it and I plan to learn from my mistakes."
