In a small congregation in rural Michigan, a judicatory official was asked to investigate the activities of a young pastor that were causing discord in the parish. A special three-
day consultation program was held in which all aspects of the life and ministry of both the pastor and the congregation were examined. During an open forum meeting, a pillar of the congregation and former council member stood up and said: "The way I see it, our pastor is bringing in the wrong type of people. He is spending too much time at the trailer court by the lake where the single-parent families and welfare people live. Once they join, then we are expected to pay all the bills around here. Something has to change!" With gentleness and loving concern, the consultation team directed the attention of the entire congregation to Luke 15. Here we find a picture of what God is really like, and we discover the mission to which we have been called. The lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son are all around us. How great the love of God that saves sinners like us! Indeed, it is amazing grace that we should be given the opportunity to be part of the saving work of Christ.
