A small group of worshipers...

A small group of worshipers in a mainline denomination began raising their hands in the Sunday morning services. They responded to the various parts of the sermon with an "Amen!" or sometimes they clapped their hands. Always during prayer time their hands were raised as their faces turned upward rather than bowed. This group went around the congregation after the service, greeting people, shaking their hands, saying, "God bless you" and "Praise the Lord!"
Many long-time members discussed this behavior, deciding that this was a distraction to their worship. They felt that those in the group were calling attention to themselves, not truly worshiping God. Others in the congregation welcomed this "witness of the Spirit." Soon the tension between the charismatic element and the traditionalists became obvious to the pastor. A few had already voiced their concerns that "things were getting out of hand, and that the pastor should take steps!"
However, the pastor responded to the complaints by assuring them that he needed the enthusiastic witness that the Holy Spirit was present. He said that he needed as well the steady and deep worship of the traditional worshiper. "Surely we can unite in worship of the one God and enjoy and love each other as the scripture teaches."
