So often in this world...

So often in this world we figure that the only response to violence is more violence. But in early 1997 there was a call for all the nations of the world to destroy their nuclear weapons. That proposal came from a group of more than fifty former generals and admirals from around the world. That movement was led by U.S. General Lee Butler, who from 1992-1994 was the Commander-in-Chief of the Strategic Air Command. In other words, he was the one in charge of much of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. But now General Butler and all of those other generals and admirals are saying that the increase in nuclear arms, which was supposed to bring more peace to the world, is really bringing more danger to the world. This passage reminds us that we cannot bring about peace by our actions alone. Rather we are to look to God to bring about the peace that goes beyond our expectations.
