Some people from the church were calling on parishioners in their homes to ask them to
increase their giving. One elderly widowed man welcomed the callers in and served them
coffee. When the callers made their case for various building improvements and program
expansion, the elderly man explained that his total income every month was less than
$1,000, and of that, he gave $35 a week to the church. He explained that he was able to
live on such a meager amount because he always gave to the Lord's work first and paid
the bills second. The callers thanked the elderly man, excused themselves, returned to the
church, and promptly raised their own pledges.
