Some seminary students are required to take a New Testament Greek reading course in which class members are asked to identify verb forms as they appear in the text. Near Christmas the New Testament Greek professor made the assignment to read carefully John 1:1-14 and promised to share with the class his insights on the words: "and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." Each student anticipated copious notes which could later be used in various parish settings. Class members were amazed and stunned as their New Testament professor reverently knelt in prayer and with opened arms received the Christ who "humbled himself and became human." In a world which awaits the landing of our space probe on the planet Mars in search of life, it is easy for us to forget that we live on a visited planet. God has come in search of us. He became flesh -- one of us -- so that we might become one of his in time and eternity. -- Reisen
