Some of us in the "golden years" remember the party-line telephone. Hanging on the wall, it had a handle on the side to turn round and round. That's the way we got the operator. We told her the party we would like to talk to, and she connected us. I remember the name of our operator: Faye. She was a pleasant, happy, helpful person.
People make jokes about the party line with everybody listening in, and everyone knowing all the news. I think it was a wonderful part of life back then. When there was sickness or when death came to a family, the word spread by the way of the party line. When there was a fire or an emergency of any kind, the word moved quickly and help came.
We don't have the party-line phone anymore, and sometimes we don't hear the latest news. Bad news spreads quickly, but good news spreads quickly too, if we pass it on.
