Some years ago a novel which gained considerable attention on university and college campuses was called, Friend in Power. The story is about a university professor who became president of an eastern university. The reason for the popularity of the novel was that it cut through all of the ambition and pride, the conniving and the politicking normally associated with filling such a position. The man who had made university president was a humble unassuming man. This was the surprise ending. It is indeed a surprise in our society that humility should score a success. Humility is a rare quality, and while we have been trained to admire it, we have ordinarily low expectations of it.
In John the Baptizer we see a model of this kind of humility at its best.
