Someone asked John Fitzgerald Kennedy...

Someone asked John Fitzgerald Kennedy why he chose the office of the presidency of the United States when that high office is laden with the burdens it has. Kennedy answered, "That is where the power is."
Power is the goal of Katie Blackwell, the heroine of Sidney Sheldon's novel Master of the Game. Kate inherits an international financial empire from her mother. That empire was founded with a fortune her father had made in diamonds in South Africa. When Kate inherited the empire it was already far-flung and highly diversified. Kate stretched the empire through ingenuity, hard work, intrigue, lies, deceit, and manipulation that destroyed everyone in her path including her own son. Kate tried to justify her moves for the sake of her company and the power it represented. This search for power and the worship of power is built solidly into our society. We measure success in terms of power. That is not new. Nor is it peculiar to our age. Yet when we read of someone like Kate Blackwell, we realize how power can corrupt. We also learn how fragile that power is and how easily it can be dissipated.
