Something about the picture of...

Something about the picture of the beauty queen and her court fascinated me. It wasn't
her face or her figure. I had just seen her in person; she didn't look like her photo.
Hollywood photographers alter pictures removing warts and tattoos. Flaws don't sell
movies and clothes. But the queen's imperfections weren't what got my attention. It was
the look in her eyes. In the twelve-year-old photograph, I saw hope -- expectation.
In the dingy apartment near downtown Los Angeles that she shared with her husband and children, she appeared unkempt. So did her husband and children. Her eyes said it all, though. Hope was gone -- defeat reeked.
The problem wasn't the children or her family's economic condition. Other aging people with children and little income remain hopeful and happy. Their eyes glisten with expectation because they possess something the Lord promises to those who love him. "You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth." Fix your attention on Jesus, the Word. He'll reinstall hope in your eyes and bounce in your step.
