Sometimes, people miss out because some past experience prevents them from taking
another person seriously. Instead of seeing an adult, all they remember is the rebellious
teenager who got into all sorts of trouble. The little boy who wreaked havoc on the
Sunday school class is now the adult class teacher. The person who rode through town on
a motorcycle is now running for town supervisor. What about that teenage girl, the one
you did not want your daughter to associate with or your son to date, who never went to
church? It is hard not to cringe when your grandchildren have her as their Vacation Bible
School teacher. It is hard taking the person seriously when all you can remember is some
past incident.
Our Lord Jesus might have experienced those same feelings with those who knew his family well. They had a hard time accepting him, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" they asked in disbelief.
