Sometimes we miss the picture of what Jesus meant when he spoke of giving a cup of cold water to a little one who was thirsty. Have you ever passed a drinking fountain and seen a small child trying to get a drink but finding it very difficult to reach the button that made the fountain work? How much easier it is when two fountains are provided, one for children and one for adults. But they did not build children's wells and adult wells in Israel. Imagine how hard it might have been for a child in the time of Jesus to secure a drink at the well. Lowering the bucket might have been difficult only because it was out of reach. But if a child succeeded in lowering the bucket, then he had the struggle to lift the heavy bucket after it was filled with water. Giving a child a cold drink was indeed an act of real kindness. -- Runk
