Somewhere along life's journey I remember a colleague's house being destroyed by fire. His initial reaction was genuine grief over the loss of things: gifts from parishioners, mementos from trips, awards of various descriptions -- in general, things. It seemed as though he just couldn't move beyond his mourning for the lost items. His whole identity seemed wrapped up in those tangible expressions of who he was, or who he had been.
Our eternal security doesn't rely on our accumulation of things: things often have a way of owning us, rather than us owning them. Our eternal security depends on our love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
