At St. James Church, worship...

At St. James Church, worship had a special feel to it that everyone could sense. It didn't matter whether you were a first-time worshiper or had been a member of the church for decades. Worship was at the heart of this community. Pastor Verden's sermons were always meaningful. Some were better than others, certainly, but you could tell that he knew the gospel and believed it in his heart. He was not just getting up to fill his fifteen minutes. His sermon time was a chance to tell the truth about what God had done in Jesus and to share how that same God was still working in the lives of the people.
That seemed to contribute something to the way people experienced worship. The place you could feel it was in the prayers. Because people expected to find Christ in the worship and because Pastor Verden had been so effective at emphasizing that Jesus Christ is alive and working, when the people at St. James prayed, they were serious about it. Not mere words to be endured, the prayers for all people came from the hearts of the people as deeply as Pastor Verden's sermons came from his. It seems that the gospel is contagious. When it is lived out from the heart, others' hearts are touched and they are empowered to live it out from their hearts as well.
