Standing on the Mount of...

Standing on the Mount of Olives, overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem, is an exhilarating experience. As your eye scans the horizon, catching a glimpse of the Church of All Nations in the Kidron Valley, the Golden Gate in the eastern wall of the city and the Dome of the Rock glistening in the sun, thoughts of others who have stood on that mount flood the mind.
Zechariah, a prophet of the Babylonian exile, could envision the Lord coming into the city by that same route, a city that another prophet had declared he had abandoned because of its idolatry (Ezekiel). Jesus entered Jerusalem by the Mount of Olives, pausing as he overlooked the city that was rejecting him and the peace he sought to bring.
As one stands there, the heart, although thrilled by the sight, is still heavy because all the potential of life lifted up by the prophet and Jesus still goes unclaimed.
