Stephen Hawking, the renowned English astrophysicist has written a book titled "A Brief History of Time." In the introduction he suggests that his publisher told him that for every formula used sales of the book would be cut in half. Consequently, he referred to only one formula, Einstein's Theory of Relativity. The book has been a best seller, but a little joke in the trade suggests that only half those who have purchased it have read it, thus proving the publisher's point! Those who dare to tackle the book, not allowing themselves to become entangled in the intricacies of physics are richly rewarded. Hawking wrestles with the issues of whether or not the universe has always existed or was the result of the "Big Bang." At the close Hawking proposes the following: "... If we do discover a complete theory, (of the universe) it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we would know the mind of God."1 We might well suggest a possibility. "The universe is the mind of God!"
