This is a strange story...

This is a strange story, and one which is difficult to understand. Most of us have immediate empathy for the poor fellow who didn't have the proper wedding clothes. Clearly, there is more beneath the surface that simply wearing proper clothing. Perhaps it has to do with living a holy life. Once you are invited to the king's wedding feast, you cannot continue living your old life. Symbolically, you must put on the proper inner clothing. Suppose I told you that I had just married a wonderful man, but I didn't plan to live with him. I was going to keep living in my house and continue my lifestyle in exactly the same way I always had. I wasn't going to put myself out for him, but I certainly expected him to send me money every month and support me. I fear it wouldn't be much of a marriage. Serious commitments call us to change our lifestyle, take off the old and put on new inner clothing. Those are the proper "wedding clothes" that Christ calls us to wear.
