Surely we have all known...

Surely we have all known times when it seems that if we could only lie down and sleep that would bring peace, only to find ourselves in bed, tossing and turning. Somehow the harder we struggle, the less comfortable we are. A woman I knew many years suffered with severe rheumatoid arthritis. For months she struggled to be on a "normal" schedule -- eating three meals a day, sleeping at night, and staying up during the day. Finally it occurred to her that she was free to re-arrange her lifestyle to a more comfortable schedule for her: she warned her friends that she might be asleep during the day and would not answer the telephone; but the most amazing thing, she told me, was that if she got hungry at midnight or 2 a.m., she went to the kitchen for something to eat. She had, in a sense, learned to speak out for herself. -- Winifred
