"Take up your cross and follow me."
On February 22, 1832, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe died at age 82. Goethe was one of the great minds in world history, excelling as a writer, educator, journalist, critic, statesman, educator, and philosopher. The last European to attempt the widespread erudition of the great Renaissance thinkers, he was extraordinarily prolific (his writings on science alone fill fourteen volumes). His version of Marlowe's "Faust" is considered a literary masterpiece. He once offered this insight: "You can never get rid of what is part of you, even if you throw it away." He also said, "Everything in the world may be endured except continued prosperity."
