The temperature hit the low 100s for the third day in succession. Kelsey sat listlessly on
the swing on her front porch drinking the cool lemonade that her mother had made for
her. As she drank it, she watched as several men dressed in orange overalls labored on a
road-improvement project in front of her house. Kelsey felt sorry for the men; they
looked hot and tired. Then Kelsey hit on the plan. She went to the kitchen, took the
pitcher of lemonade from the fridge, gathered some glasses from the cupboard, a handful
of cookies from the cookie jar, and headed out to the men.
When she approached the men, a man sitting in an air-conditioned truck, rolled down his window and asked what she wanted.
"I want to give those men some lemonade and cookies," she answered. "They look so hot."
The man in the truck, a guard for the workers from a local prison, decided that Kelsey didn't have a sinister escape plan arranged and ordered the men to sit in the shade of a tree while she gave them glasses of lemonade and cookies. The men gulped down the treats with much gratitude. When they finished and were about to return to work, they all thanked her. One said something like, "Miss, Jesus will bless you for giving us this glass of lemonade."
Kelsey relates that it was this man's response that started her down the path that has led her first to seminary then to prison chaplaincy work.
