Tennyson tells the story of a young man named Gareth who wants with all his heart to become a knight of the Round Table. He has seen the vision and shares his dream with his parents. They are not pleased. They do all they can to change his mind. His mother, Bellicent, begs him to show pity on her, an old woman with a husband who is all but "smouldered out." She reminds Gareth that his two older brothers are already with King Arthur, and isn't that enough from one family? She entices him with promises of exciting deer hunts and a princess to marry. But to no avail! He must answer the call. "O mother, how can you keep me tethered to you? Shame. Man am I grown and man's work I must do. Follow the deer? Follow the Christ, the King. Live pure, speak true, right wrong, follow the King -- else wherefore born?"
