This text is a statement of the essential unity of all creation. In particular, a special unity is declared by all those who acknowledge Jesus as Lord. That unity is called the church and is analogous to the human body.
Every generation has needed to hear the proclamation of that unity. Our generation is no exception. Nothing is more abhorrent to me than those prophets of disunity and conflict who run around "bad-mouthing" any who differ with them on such issues of our time as poverty, racial justice, abortion, Indian land claims, and nuclear disarmament. A little humility and prayer before speaking would help. So would listening. And so would remembering we all have one Creator and one Father.
An example of the antithesis is a recent series of radio programs described in the New York Times. (August 27, 1985) There is shocking hate and perversity of some of the statements made on those broadcasts:
"If a Jew comes near you, run a sword through him --"
"Blacks and browns are the enemy. Jesus Christ is a white man's God --"
Never has the need been greater for a bold proclamation of the Gospel of the unity of all the Creator's children.
