There are a series of caves near the little town of Warsaw, Ontario. These caves were formed by the draining of a prehistoric lake. The caves are small. You must crawl through on hands and knees, sometimes sliding along on your belly.
As you descend into the caves, crawling down some rocky ledges, it is as if someone progressively puts darker and darker paper over a light bulb. Each foot one crawls deeper into the cave the darker it gets. When you hit the floor of the cave and begin to maneuver away from the entrance, the light suddenly disappears. Darkness envelopes you. You are completely reliant upon a flashlight and the little batteries that power it.
It is fun, from time to time, to turn out the flashlight and let the dark consume you. Pitch black. Fingers inches from your nose remain invisible. Then snap on the light, and fingers, hands, arms and body pop back into view. The longer you leave the light out, the greater your sense of relief at seeing the light.
