There is a form of psychology known as paradoxical therapy. A woman left for work in the early dawn and needed her headlights. By the time she got to work it was daylight. She forgot to turn her lights off, and that evening her battery was dead. The same thing happened the next day. That day her boss, a psychologist, told her he could ensure she would never do it again if she followed his instructions for the next five days. She agreed.
On the next day she came to work and left the lights on, but remembered, went out and shut them off. On learning the lights were off the psychologist sent her back out to her car to turn them on, and he instructed her to leave them on all day. She did so, and of course needed a jump start that night. The next day she shut them off as soon as she arrived, but for the next three days the boss made her go out, turn them on and leave them on all day. She never left her lights on again! Paradoxical therapy seems to contradict or initially invite the opposite of the final goal.
