There is a story of two monks who were struggling with the whole matter of their holiness and purity of thought. As they walked along the road they discussed how difficult it was to keep one s self from being tainted by sin.
When they came to a river the monks found a beautiful young lady awaiting some help as she forded the rushing stream. "Could one of you help me get across?" she asked. One of the monks quickly obliged and offered, "I would be happy to help you. Hop on my back and I will tote you across." When they reached the other side the young maiden quickly made her way on a different route and the two monks continued their journey.
After walking in silence for several miles, the monk who had observed his brother bearing the beautiful young maiden across the stream could not contain himself any longer. "I still can't believe that you did it." "Did what?" his cohort asked. "That you carried that beautiful young maiden across the stream on your back and submitted yourself to such temptation." "Ah, Brother Charles, are you still carrying the thought of the young girl with you? I put her down as soon as we got to the other side of the stream."
It's by letting go that we can best cope with most of the temptations that confront us. This is the way of escape that God has given to us in most instances.
