There was a man who lived out in the countryside. And every year the road in front of his house kept getting worse and worse, with more potholes all the time. The fellow kept calling the highway department to complain. But nothing ever seemed to happen. Finally, after the man had called for months on end, the highway department agreed to do something about his problem.
But what they did was not what the man had expected. Instead of repairing his stretch of road, the highway department erected a sign that said: "Caution -- Rough Road Ahead."
The storm on the lake was a foreshadowing that the Christian life does not always involve smooth sailing. Rather there are times when the going is extremely rough. But even during those times, Jesus is with us.
