There's a story about a runaway boy writing a letter home to his mother. The letter hopes
that his old-fashioned father will be able to forgive him and allow him to come
home.
Dear Mom,
In a few days I'll be on the bus that passes near our corner. If Dad will take me back, please tie a white cloth on the oak tree near the stop sign.
Days later, the bus was approaching the corner and the boy's heart beat faster as the corner came nearer. "Would there be a cloth on the tree, or none?" he fretted.
He couldn't bear to look at the tree. Turning to the woman next to him, he asked, "Ma'am, will you do me a favor? At the next corner, please tell me if there's a white cloth tied to the oak tree near the stop sign."
The bus got closer and the woman leaned over and said in a shocked tone of voice, "Son, there isn't just a cloth tied to the tree. Why, there's a white cloth tied to practically every branch!"
