These days, politicians and other public servants have nowhere to hide. When they run for office or are nominated for an appointed position, people throughout the land begin sorting through their lives with fine tooth combs. Their opponents are looking for anything that might make them look bad in the eyes of the public. Their allies are searching the record for anything that would hinder their credibility, to be prepared with an adequate defense should anything suspect be uncovered. And, of course, the media is ready and willing to publicize and analyze any infraction discovered -- from hiring undocumented people (even if their employment was legal at the time!) to having illicit love affairs. Obviously, there are few lives that could undergo such intense public scrutiny and turn up pure. As children of God, when our lives are scrutinized under God's watchful and loving eye, we fall short of the way God would have us live. Fortunately, God is watching over us not to entrap us in our sin but to embrace us in divine love. -- Spencer
