To think in terms of...

To think in terms of price and profit is a natural attitude in secular life. Everyone enjoys a bargain. This spirit also carries over into religion; we have a lot of "dollar-day religion" today. People like to shop around to see where they can get the best return. A few years ago there was a book titled, Why Not Try God? That's a little like, "Why not try Jones' Liver Pills?" Let's see if they will help and find out what we can get out of them!
True religion is different. Real faith does not bargain with God. God is the Father, and as children we cannot shop around to find out what family offers us the most privileges. A child may often dream that he is really a prince or a king, or perhaps a Rockefeller or a Dupont. But such relationships are impossible, for we are the children of our parents even if we'd like something different.
Our relation to God is the same. He is our Father and we are his children, for better or for worse. There can be no bargaining, no fingers crossed. Under any conditions, we must keep the faith or lose everything.
