Thomas Aquinas was one of the greatest theologians in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. The writer of the most extensive and systematic exposition of the faith, he spent his life theologizing and writing about God, But finally, he put down his pen and never wrote about God again. When asked why, he replied, "All I have written is like straw compared to what has been revealed to me. The more I know God, the less I know about God." Thomas knew with Saint Paul, "We do not know how to pray as we ought." Aquinas stopped using the name God, so as to recover the meaning of the awe of God.
