Thomas Jefferson, who has mightily shaped the thinking of contemporary Americans, was a deist. In things religious he was "Greek--minded" rather than "Hebrew--minded." Not open to the possibility that the maker of all things could in fact interrupt his own creation with the unexpected, Jefferson created his own version of the New Testament. Excising all miracle stories, he assembled a collection of comforting passages intended to inspire but not to assault credibility. A deist Bible has no room for this text. Jesus assaulted the logic of his followers by his incredible sea--walk. In the process, he gave them a vision of reality never quite grasped by the overlogical Jefferson, and many of us too--Greek moderns.-- Sherer
