In Thornton Wilder's play, The Skin Of Our Teeth, Mrs. Antrobus says to her husband: "I didn't marry you because you were perfect; I married you because you made me a promise." Throw away the ring and the promise remains.
The promise is sacred and holy, witnessed and sealed by God. So it is only natural to want to believe that promises will stand the test of time and not be broken. But we know that the promises we make to each other do get broken. Our character is tested by the promises we make, and the content of our character is revealed by the promises we keep. Just as this is true for us, so it is true for God.
God's character is tested by the promises he makes and God's character is revealed to us by the promises he keeps. We are here today because God made and kept the promise to send us the Holy Spirit to be our guide and counselor. And so we are able to believe God and take our stand on the promises he makes.
