Those who do evil always...

Those who do evil always attempt to cover it up. Isaiah talks about the earth refusing any longer to hide those who have been slain, and the corpses rising out of the earth to accuse those who were responsible for their deaths. In Argentina during the 1970s and '80s, the government acted as though they all had gone mad. The economy had deteriorated to the point of 1,000 percent inflation! Businesses failed as a result, and there was great unrest, of course. Those in power feared that a revolution was in the making, and they began to arrest anyone who criticized the policies or members of their national government. This included women, children of all ages, and the aged, as well as men of militant age. Those who were arrested almost never reappeared, not even their bodies were to be found. This went on for years. Then a few women took courage. They took pictures of those in their own families who had disappeared, and they gathered in the square in front of the parliament building. Silently, they stood, speaking only to those who stopped to look at the pictures they held. "Do you know, senor, where my child/husband is?" Always, the answer was one of two: either, "No, I have never seen this person," or "Go home, or you will be arrested, too." But they would not. Over the years, the crowds grew in the square. The names and faces of the "disappeared" were posted on poles and windows. The movement spread across Argentina, in every marketplace, in front of every government building. The women gathered and faced down the officials. Eventually, the government fell, and the new leaders began to dig around the prisons. There, in mass graves, the bodies were unearthed and the process of identification began. There are still thousands unaccounted for, and probably graves will be found yet in the future. But the earth has given up her secrets. Those slain have been found, and their bodies speak where they have not been able to. -- Herrmann
